1,050 kW of Cogeneration is installed and is now undergoing initial start-up at Sachem School District as part of their Phase Three Energy Performance Contract (EPC) with ECG as their Owner’s Representative and Engineer-of-Record.
HOW WILL COGENERATION HELP SACHEM SD SAVE?
By using the cogeneration plant during the heating months, the High Schools and Middle Schools at Sachem can produce electricity while offsetting the heating input for the hot water heating systems by using the excess heat that is rejected by the cogeneration unit. The cogenerated thermal energy will supply the domestic hot water system in conjunction with the existing boiler equipment.
BUILDING - COGEN SIZE
High School East - 375KW
High School North - 300KW
Sagamore Middle School - 75KW
Samoset Middle School - 150KW
Seneca Middle School - 75KW
Sequoya Middle School - 75KW
HOW MUCH WILL SACHEM SD SAVE IN THE PHASE III EPC?
With a Phase III Project Size of $21.6 Million and major Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) implemented such as;
✔ 1,050 Kw of Cogeneration
✔ 2 Megawatts of Solar
✔ 1,000+ LED Lighting Fixtures Installed
✔ Water Conservation Upgrades
Sachem is on track to save $1.2 MILLION in ANNUAL ENERGY SAVINGS!
WHAT EXACTLY IS COGENERATION?
A cogeneration plant consumes natural gas while producing electricity and heat for use for hot water heating system. Based upon the current cost of fuel oil and rates for electricity experienced, especially on Long Island, this measure is an excellent opportunity to mitigate market supply risks and produce free heat for the heating systems.
